When your life is as outsized as the World’s Greatest Showman PT Barnum it’s pretty easy to - you know - gloss over the grimmer aspects when you turn it into an uplifting musical movie. But the way to understand a person is to look at them, warts and all. Josh and Chuck take a full accounting in this classic episode.
# Stuff You Should Know: P.T. Barnum
Josh and Chuck dive deep into the wild and contradictory life of P.T. Barnum, the legendary showman who basically invented modern hucksterism and marketing while simultaneously exploiting countless people for profit. Starting from his humble Connecticut beginnings through his rise as a lottery schemer and newspaper publisher, they trace how Barnum transformed into an entertainment empire builder—from displaying the elderly Joyce Heth to creating museum sensations like the Fiji Mermaid and discovering General Tom Thumb. The guys explore how Barnum was simultaneously a genius promoter, a shameless con artist, and a legitimately hardworking entrepreneur who genuinely understood how to dazzle crowds, making him far more complicated than any movie could ever capture.
